I wrote this piece for my dear friend Melissa Frei for her October newsletter. I wanted to share it with you here. I hope you experience the magic of the season and the deep knowing of the Whole of who you are! You can find Melissa at www.melissafrei.com
This being October and the time of year when we celebrate the thinning of the veil between our world and the world of Spirit, it is the appropriate time to talk about embracing the natural darkness within ourselves. Do you ever wonder why so many of us love scary movies or why we seem to embrace Halloween so readily? There are many reasons including that Halloween is based on an ancient pagan holiday known as Samhain (pronounced sow-en). Samhain was the day set aside to remember loved ones who had passed on and a time to recognize that the veil was thin and so spiritual communication was easier. Because this history is in our collective consciousness, it informs all of us and so stirs the very cells of our being that remember we are greater than just this earthly plane.
This is also the time of year seasonally when the Wheel of the Year turns and we enter Fall and so begin to feel the deep energies of the wise crone goddess. She of Winter and descent into the deepest regions of ourselves. She of hibernation, withdrawal, and dormant energies resting before birthing creativity again in the Spring. She is the wisdom of experience and sometimes our experience comes from our darkest moments. This is where the dark goddesses come to our aid. The energy of the natural world is turning inward right now as trees, flowers, and animals respond to the change of season. Just as the natural world turns within, so do we. We are part of the natural world. This is why linking with the seasons and the cycles of the moons helps us stay in sync with our own rhythms. The world around us is a reflection of our inner selves and in turn we infuse the world around us with the recognition that we are all One. This turning within is one of the things dark goddesses help us do. They help us face all of the Whole of who we are. They help us see that our fears are really sacred journey markers along our path that show us where we need to work, change, grow, and shift our perceptions.
Contrary to the fear the word ‘dark’ might conjure, a dark goddess is not a ‘bad’ deity. She is the representation of our shadow selves, our inner darkness, and also sometimes, our greatest strength. One of my spirit guides is an ancient celtic goddess named Morrighan. One the first things she said to me when she showed up in meditation was that she was my “missing link”. She said she was the part of me that was missing when I was too afraid to do something and she encouraged me to call upon her anytime I needed to face and walk through my fears. That was several years ago, and believe me, I have called upon her many times!
The idea of a goddess at all may be unusual to you, let alone a dark goddess. But I assure you that the manifestations of Divine Mother are all of the Light, it’s just that some of them help us on the end of the spectrum that we call ‘dark’, which again, is a sacred part of ourselves that is here for our growth and spiritual learning. If you would like to work with a dark goddess to learn the wisdom of your experiences, meditation during a dark moon cycle is perfectly suited for this endeavor. The dark of the moon is the cycle that belongs to Her. It is the time when the moon has finished waning after being full and it will be dark before the first sliver of the new moon is visible in the night sky. Sit quietly and say whatever prayer of protection you normally say before spiritual work. Call upon goddess Brigit or Archangel Michael to be your “spiritual bouncer” to ensure that you are safely protected in the Divine Light of Mother /Father God as you meditate. Then, simply ask for a dark goddess to work with you for your highest good. Make sure you pay close attention to any thoughts, visions, feelings, and words that may show up. Ask her name and ask any questions you feel guided to, but particularly ask how you can overcome any fears you feel may be holding you back. Make sure you record your meditation experience and thank your goddess for working with you. You could even research dark goddesses first and pick one that you feel you most resonate with. A word of caution: there are many, many things written on the web that are not exactly the Truth. If you go looking for information on dark goddesses, please use a discerning eye and trust your intuitive guidance.
Working with dark goddesses is not easy. They will show you what needs to be worked on. When Morrighan first showed up to me, I did not know who she was, and quite frankly, she scared me! However, she explained to me that she could be scarier than anything I would ever encounter and that she was stronger than my ego self. That moment was life changing for me and began a path of true transformation that honestly, has not always been easy, but has always been for my highest good. I love Morrighan and I am grateful for her everyday. Whenever I do spiritual work, she is one of the goddesses who holds the four corners of the room for me or any sacred space I am in. I trust her implicitly. She is strength and courage, and deep, deep wisdom. She is friend and teacher and companion.
As you move into the essence of All of who you are, do not deny your darkness. You might just find your greatest gifts, strengths, and yes, spirit guides! Have a blessed Samhain!
I bow to the Divinity within you.
Love,
Brittany
